Overcoming Food Allergies

Can We Overcome a Food Allergy?

Hello from Jonson H

In another post, I wrote about the psychological aspects of overcvoming a food allergy. Now, let’s look at other ways we might deal with food allergies.

A Survival Guide to Overcome and Recover from a Food Allergy

Selective eating… you are to undergo such a phase when you are allergic to some kinds of food and beverages. A food allergy is the body’s immunologic reaction due to the presence of food protein.

Nowadays, there are several reading materials to help you understand the things you need to know about food allergy. One such example is the book called “5 Years without Food: The Food Allergy Survival Guide: How to Overcome Your Food Allergies and Recover Good Health.” The book gives an  overview of what a food allergy is, as well as the foods which you can or cannot eat. With alternatives. Additionally, you will also learn some necessary food allergy treatment from the book. Furthermore, “a personal testimonial” from the author makes the book credible as it was reviewed by readers.

Aside from the information which can be derived from the book, here are some helpful additional ideas you might want to add in your collection of thoughts.

Commonly, adults are allergic to foods such as eggs, tree nuts, peanuts, shellfish and fish. Kids, on the other hand, are inflicted with allergies to peanuts, milk and eggs. If you are aware that you have food allergy, what you need to do is be well-informed about the allergy you have. By doing so, you will be able to overcome and recover from such allergy.

Some more common types of food allergies will be discussed for further reference:

Egg Allergy

An individual afflicted with the said allergy is hypersensitive to foods containing substance from eggs – it may be the white or the yolk. Or both.

For some time, you will be restricted from consuming foods containing eggs. These days, there are egg substitutes which you can use such as tapioca and starch from potatoes. Apple sauce can also be an alternative.

Nut Allergy

People who are oversensitive to tree nuts end up experiencing allergic attacks. Nut allergy should not be interchanged with peanut allergy. It is different from the latter, since tree nuts are considered fruits that are dry.

Types of food prepared from soy nuts are considered to be a good alternative in the absence of tree nuts in your diet. A soy nut is not necessarily a nut; it is a soybean which undergoes the process of soaking and baking to achieve its crisp end result.

Milk Allergy

There are individuals who upon ingestion of proteins from a cow’s milk develop an allergic reaction. When this happens, such individuals are considered to be allergic in milk.

To obtain optimum result from milk allergy treatment, you need to completely avoid milk allergens. In order for you to fill in nutritional gap from milk, you can choose to include soy milk or rice milk in your diet.

Seafood Allergy

If  you are hypersensitive to foods such as shellfish or flaky fishes then you are most likely allergic to seafood.

The only way to avoid allergic attacks is prevention from eating shellfish and fishes which you are allergic into. Moreover, you also need to be careful on selecting pre-packaged foods for its labeling may not declare that it contains seafood ingredients such as shellfish or fish.

There is a reason for you to undergo selective eating. It will make you overcome the allergic reaction which is happening into your system. Moreover, it will help you recover and survive. To some extent, it will help you cease your food allergy. Selective eating may vary. Some food allergies are treated on a short-term; others are not treated in their lifetime.

One final point, is that many people, myself included, are only intolerant to some foods. particularly to such things as wheat and dairy products. People that are intolerant can eat the foods but may have side effects. Weight gain that is hard to lose, for instance. A visit to your doctor may be a wise move if you even suspect that you have some kind of food intolerance.

And go for a walk.

Can We Change Our Metabolism?

Wouldn’t It Be Great If We Could Change Our Metabolism?

Hello from Jonson H

Wouldn’t it be terrific if we could just wave a magic wand and either speed up or slow down our metabolism. Well, I don’t belive in magic wands either.

Wrong thoughts…wrong metabolism!

Is our Metabolism “temporary or permanent?” Of course the latter would be the most popular answer. Unless you are the type who is strangely inclined with quick-constant-changes in your life. In whatever field it is, people find security and stability in permanence. It is funny to think that in dieting however, they give in to short-term solutions.

These short-term solutions come in different ways such as skipping meals, working out with an empty stomach and so forth.

What are the most common metabolism malpractices?

  • Dieters only think of one factor affecting metabolism. There are different factors that lower or heightens metabolic rate like age, sex, sleeping habits, amount of muscle mass. The tendency for most of us wanting to lose weight is to get carried away with just one area of consideration. The most typical example is that he focuses on building muscles but neglect sleep. This is not a good way because it will not give positive outcomes.
  • Dieters just exercise for the fat zone. This thing does not sound new to us. Even gym instructors give this as  advice. So, the dieters think that doing this would really shape them up. The truth is, they need an over-all work out to maintain weight or even improve it to the level you want to.
  • Another big malpractice is when dieters restrict calories too much. For experts, when food goes down too low, metabolism slows down to create a balance inside for bodily activities. There is a big possibility that you lose weight, but this may come from wrong portions of the body like the muscles or organs. You just lose weight temporarily but in the long run, you will lose muscle mass, and eventually regain weight. The yo yo effect we all know about.
  • Not eating enough or irregularly,  is a big problem for those of us cursed with diabetes. That’s for sure. But we are talking about metabolism here.
  • The worst malpractice is the use of diet pills to lose weight. Metabolism is greatly affected by this wrongdoing. They think that taking these pills would tame their appetite and lose weight. This is just for short-term results, you have to think of long-term wellness over a temporary rejoice.

We must put in mind that health will always be the most important one not only for diet-conscious individuals but for all people. Therefore, we must not be blinded with these glittering diet malpractices. As we age, out metabolism slows down. Using arificial means doesn’t help. It just hinders.

Let’s go for a walk.

Are There Any Hidden Allergies?

Are There Hidden Allergies to Watch For?

Hello from Jonson H

Actually, yes there are. Some thjat make you fatter than you should be.

Was there an instance when you ate something like an ice cream, cake, cheese, or a piece of fruit – and you felt even hungrier? Have you experienced any food urges wherein you can’t satisfy such cravings except eating the same food?

If your answer to the questions above is ‘yes’, then you may have food allergies or at least intolerances. And you’re probably fatter than you want to be, by now. Food allergy can make you fat, and that is already a proven fact.

There are many who tell us that some foods make us feel full and others that do the opposite. In another post. I plan on writing about that.

Allergic people crave for foods that they’re allergic to and this is caused by food sensitivities. Take note of drug addicts that exhibit withdrawal symptoms. The same thing also happens to people with food allergies. When we are not able to eat certain foods, we experience discomfort.

A number of obese individuals can attest to the irresistible power of their food allergy. Compulsive eaters are craving and continuously eating allergenic foods that they’re addicted to every day. They have no idea that their eating habits and food cravings have something to do with a physiological need. The withdrawal symptoms must be and should be stopped.

Specialized doctors who diagnose and treat allergies are now accepting the simultaneous phenomenon of addiction and allergy to both chemicals and food. These doctors are called clinical ecologists, and they greatly believe that almost all persistent health problems like depression, migraine, arthritis, and fatigue are all caused by chemicals and food allergies. A great number of people are affected by food allergies even in the industrialized countries.

The same kind of food can actually cause dissimilar reactions among different people. The genetic predisposition of each individual is said to be the determining factor if the person is vulnerable to such condition.

When a person has edema and/or vasculitis, the body organ that is targeted are blood vessels. If you constantly eat the food to which you’re allergic to, Edema or water retention is a very common condition. Among individuals with food allergies,  this is one factor that contributes to obesity. If you quit intake of the food that you’re allergic to, you can lose an approximate of 10 pounds in just a week and without using any diuretic.

Fat persons can lose weight without undergoing any diet plan. Food sensitivities cause your body to keep hold of fats and water, and if you remove these foods, your body will not hold excess water or fat. Therefore, you can lose weight already. You can seek professional help so that you can be provided with a diet that’s low in allergen. Many doctors believe that losing weight has nothing to do with the calories in your diet.

The brain’s limbic portion is affected by food sensitivity probably because this is known as the control center. All your emotions, memory functions, vegetative functions, body temperature, blood pressure, sexuality, sleep, thirst, and hunger are controlled by this portion. There have been conclusive studies showing that the vital functions are greatly affected by your food allergies.

According to a neurophysiologic analysis, allergenic foods can trigger opioid enkephalin in the brain. The body produces this narcotic, and if you frequently eat allergenic foods, the narcotic will increase or rise.

Major food allergens include coffee, wheat, dairy products, corn, and eggs. Before, medical doctors ignore food allergies because there is no specific drug that can be used to treat such condition. Most of today’s doctors rely on certain supplements and avoidance of such allergenic foods.

What Treatments Exist for Food Allergies?

Are There Treatments for Food Allergies?

Hello from Jonson H

Allergies to food are most commonly dealt with by the avoidance of the allergy-causing food. In the same way as we avoid touching a hot oven if we don’t want to get burned.

When the allergen (the one that causes allergic reactions) has been recognized, the sufferer is then advised to eliminate it from his or her diet. A basic precaution.  This is achieved by being highly aware of what food is being prepared for us, and reading carefully the food labels on food products. And asking very specific questions about the ingredients included in the food when ordering food, also helps avoid allergic mishaps when eating out.

All this cautiousness is due to the fact that there are individuals out there that are highly allergic to foods  in which even a tiny amount of an allergen can cause major symptoms. Plus, there are also food preparations that contain some common food allergens which the average person would not usually link together.

To prevent exposure to foods that you may be allergic to, your personal self-awareness is very important. You should know the food culprits that are causing your own  uncomfortable reactions. Knowledge can help you and your physician in formulating a management plan for your allergy. You should also make it a routine to scrutinize food labels when checking for possible food allergens included in the ingredients. When dining out in restaurants, or even at a friend’s home, do not hesitate inquiring about the ingredients of the meal you are planning to eat.

Another precautionary measure, especially for those who manifest severe allergic symptoms when exposed to a food allergen, is the wearing of necklaces or bracelets provided by a medical institution to alert other people about your allergies. In case of an accident, for example, or a state of unconsciousness, medical personnel will then have some idea of the root cause of your condition..

Patients are also advised to constantly bring with them epinephrine self-injectibles which are prescribed by their physicians. Their physicians will instruct them how to self-administer the medication during an episode of allergic reaction.

If symptoms seem to be getting intense, emergency medics should always be called to help transport the individual to the nearest hospital. Severe and sudden allergic reactions are also called anaphylactic reactions. Anaphylaxis may be fatal if not treated quickly.

Other than epinephrine injections, often knownas epi-pens, there are still other medications that can be prescribed by the doctor to deal with allergic reactions to food. These medications would include bronchodilators, antihistamines, corticosteroids, and adrenergic agonists.

Bronchodilators relieve symptoms that are associated with difficulty of breathing. It basically dilates the bronchial air passageways of the respiratory tract that have become inflamed due to the allergic reaction which eventually helps the patient breathe normally. Highly allergy-sensitive individuals should carry with them fast-acting bronchodilators if they also experience asthmatic attacks from time to time that may be triggered by the allergic reaction.

Antihistamines alleviate symptoms like sneezing, runny nose, hives, rashes, and gastrointestinal discomforts. And corticosteroids lessen the severity of skin irritations and other inflammation caused by the allergic reaction. Antihistamines can be available in syrup or chewable tablet for easy access when a sudden allergic episode occurs.

Adrenergic agonists are utilized during emergency treatment for anaphylactic reactions. Results are immediate and highly effective. Adrenergic agonists typically alleviate symptoms of angioedema, cardiovascular collapse, bronchospasm, and hives.

In addition to medications that fight off symptoms of food allergies, there are treatments that are causing quite a stir in the medical world. Although there are not enough studies that have been conducted to prove that these treatments are effective.

One these revolutionary treatments includes the desensitization of the patient by administering injections of small amounts of the food allergen on a regular basis. This treatment claims that it can eventually make the patient endure the food allergen in the long run. Another is the introduction of a diluted substance that contains the food allergen underneath the tongue thirty minutes before the actual food intake. This treatment works in a way that it will defuse the symptomatic manifestations of the consumed food allergen.

Lastly, bear in mind that there is no cure to food allergies. All the aforementioned are only there to help alleviate the symptoms of allergic reactions.

What Symptoms Do Food Allergies Have?

Do Food Allergies Come With Warning Signs?

Hello from Jonson H

As you may  know already,a  food allergy is an unusual reaction to food that is triggered by an exposure to certain food types. Which then creates a response from our immune system. The reaction that the immune system eventually generates will then cause some very discomfiting symptoms.

Looking more closely, food allergens (the ones that causes allergic reactions) are proteins that unfortunately withstood the high temperatures of cooking as well as the acidic substances and enzymes of the gastrointestinal system. These allergens consequently live on to pass through the linings of the gastrointestinal tract, disperse into the blood circulatory system, and travel to organs of target, which results to different allergic symptoms all over the body.

My initial comment in the previous paragraph is important. Scientists tell us that cooking our foods generally lowers it’s food values for we humans. We are apparently supposed to eat our food raw, or nearly so when possible.

Food allergy symptoms are commonly noted as irritation of the skin which may involve such conditions as  hives, eczema, and a simple rash. Other symptoms may also include irritations in the gastrointestinal organs like vomiting, indigestion, diarrhea, stomach aches, and nausea. Through the years, there have been numerous documented allergic reactions seen in a lot of people, the following is additional information about other allergic symptoms that even you have experienced but have failed to take notice:

– insomniac tendencies or sleeping difficulties
– moodiness
– fatigue
– heartburn
– constipation
– symptoms that resemble arthritis
– canker sores
– nocturnal enuresis or bed wetting
– inflammation of the face and lips
– rhinitis
– migraine
– wheezing

Furthermore, allergic reactions to a specific kind of food can also generate a specific symptom. Therefore, we can say that there are symptoms that can pinpoint to a certain type of food allergy. Which symptom or sign can then be quite useful in figuring out what medications to administer. And the formulation of a management plan. In other words, it is possible to determine the source of the allergy by evaluating the symptoms.

Simple headaches are usually symptoms of an allergic reaction to chocolates and wheat. Migraines, on the other hand, are typically caused by an allergy to cheese, nuts, citrus fruits, tomatoes, milk, eggs, and MSG or monosodium glutamate. Monosodium glutamate is a chemical used for seasonings in a lot of foods but only those which have excessive amounts can cause allergic reactions.

Eczema or atopic dermatitis, which is a swelling and drying of the skin, can be seen in allergies to citrus fruits, eggs, and tomatoes. Hives or urticaria is also a form of skin irritation which is represented by elevated skin welts that are reddish. Hives can be very itchy, this allergic reaction is common among those caused by tomatoes, eggs, shellfish, mangoes, pork meat, nuts, and strawberries.

Asthma is commonly seen in wheat and egg allergies.

There are also allergy manifestations that affect the physical energy, consciousness, and emotions of a person. These reactions can be regularly seen in allergies to wheat, soybeans, corn, and milk.

As you may have observed, many types of foods share the same symptoms most of the time. A careful assessment and physical evaluation is needed to at least determine the source of the allergy. It is not only in the symptoms that medical professionals can determine what the source of allergy is but also through blood tests, diet eliminations, and food challenges. Careful assessment of daily food intake by the patient can be of great help in pinpointing the culprit and as well as a comprehensive analysis of the symptoms observed.

As always, be aware that an allergy and an intolerance are two disctinctly separate things. So, a consultation with a reputable allergist, who will be part of the medical team, can assist you in fighting your allergy that may have caused you great discomfort in your daily life.

Can Food Allergies Be Cured?

What Can We Do to Cure Our food Allergy?

Hello from Jonson H

Allergies With a Psychological Origin

Food allergy is one of the easiest conditions to cure when we are talking about psychological methods. Perhaps. However, it is recommended to use other methods that are widely available. It is because one treatment may be effective for one person, but not to others. Our psychological make-up varies from one to another. From the points of view of some psychologists, food allergy has something to do with our emotions. Our  experiences or illnesses from years ago. However, most people are usually unconscious about it.

Take for instance; when you were a child, you have developed headaches or nausea from bugs that you have picked up. Yet you may still associate it with the food you have eaten recently. If you experience the same thing in the days to come, it could bring back the same emotional upset and symptoms of the disease.

To eliminate food allergy which have their basis in psychological origins, you need to successfully send the message to your subconscious mind to break that association. You can get the help of a hypnotist or a knowledgeable friend about the process. As usual, discuss ith with your doctor first and get a referral to a recognised professional.

You may need to dig deeper to find out the origin of your food allergy. It is necessary to determine the first incident that connects food allergy into your life. Your subconscious state definitely knows what had happened that first time and for sure that would have been  likely to be highly traumatic. But you don’t need to be upset again, you were young before. Now you are more mature, your way of thinking has also changed. Take away all your negative emotions that you have felt before because of food allergy, and start to think recovery from that distressful situation.

More often, it can be caused by what somebody said (it can include your parent, doctor, teacher, or another child) or something you witnessed in connection with food allergy. Whatever it is, there is something that was imprinted subconsciously and still operates presently. Thus you don’t want to have such a condition. If you know the origin of food allergy, then it is easy to find the cure.

Talking to your  subconscious mind and letting it do what the therapist says,  needs a trigger and a command. Your therapist can tell it to disconnect all the things that are associated to your food allergy in all the levels of your subconscious mind so that the condition will never bother you again.

Yes that probably sounds a bit woo woo, but it does work. And remarkably well.

The following is my take on how it may be done.

Sometimes, a friend can do it for you. Yet it’s much better to try it when accompanied by a trained professional. But I’m not going to pursue that here. Sufficient so say that the method involves a type of meditation. For some, meditation has nasty connotations. Yet it can be argued that any form of inner focus is a form of meditation. Including prayer.

Your subconscious mind is not considered a reasonable mind but a mind which follows order. Some psychologists say that our subconscious mind is like a never ending “video” of our life thus far. It records every thought and action we have ever had. It them compares our most recent thought against the “video”, in order to produce our current action or reaction.

Try to imagine eating the foods you are allergic to. Extend your imagination (aka your subconscious mind) until the food allergy symptoms appear, and then try to observe your feelings. If you feel the symptoms, then it shows that it is in your mind. This procedure can be done repeatedly until the results become positive.

This method provides no guarantees, however it can make a difference. Food allergies can be recurrent during an emotional upset. Just do the procedure all over again, until your upsetting episode is over.

Food allergies with psychological origin can often be treated in this way. But still, it is advisable to consult a doctor.

What Causes Food Allergies?

Why Do We Get Food Allergies?

Hello from Jonson H

A few weeks back, I posted a series of articles about how low impact exercise such as walking is a great help for us polder people in maintaining our health. In one of those posts, I included an overview about how food allergies, can and do only show themselves later in life, then have long term effects on how we live our lives from then on.

So I thought I’d add a short series of posts about food allergies.

The Causes

The Cures

The Hidden Allergies – that affect weight

The Symptoms

The Treatments

The Diets

Some Meal Recipes

Right then. Let’s start.

Some Basic Causes of Food Allergies

In simple terms, an allergy takes place when the immune system suddenly has an abnormal response to a certain material that is usually not detrimental to most individuals. Unless those people have allergies. When an allergy is triggered by a substance or allergen, a person’s body recognizes this as a trespasser. So it subsequently releases chemicals to fight off the “trespasser”, causing symptoms that can range from a simple irritation to a fatal reaction that may even lead to death.

Food allergy is a reaction made by our body’s immune system in which antibodies are produced by the body as a result of a negative effect to some foods. Though there are many individuals who claim that they have food allergies, there are only a few who really have certain allergic reactions to food.

Most people confuse food allergy with food intolerance.

Food intolerance and food allergy are both sensitivity reactions to food, but intolerance to certain types of food does not affect the immune system and isn’t really a life threatening incident.

As of the present time, the medical world still has not found any cure for food allergies. Allergy management only involves the prevention of intake of food allergens and some diet modifications.

Looking closely, during an allergic reaction, the body’s immune system releases antibodies, specifically something called immunoglobulin E. Which subsequently causes the production of chemicals like histamine in the process of “protecting” the body. Now, these chemicals are the root cause of symptoms which may include an irritation in the eyes, skin, throat, lungs, and the gastrointestinal organs. These take place whenever the individual is exposed to the allergen.

Any type of food can cause allergic reactions to different types of individuals.

There are eight major foods out there that are often the main culprits of an allergic reaction.

These eight major allergy-causing foods are: fish, soy, milk, wheat, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, and shellfish.

By and large, individuals afflicted with allergies react only to some allergy-causing foods. Sometimes, an allergy to a certain type of food may also cause allergic reaction to foods that may be related with the allergen food. This incidence is known as cross-reaction. For instance, an allergic reaction to wheat may also cause a reaction to rye. Allergy to pollens may subsequently cause an allergy to green apples, hazelnuts, almonds, and peaches. A reaction to goat’s milk may also be associated with an allergy to cow’s milk. And the list goes on and on.

So, I’m going to leave it there. If you want or need more information, please ask your doctor.

Moreover, individuals who have been afflicted with asthma and/or eczema may also be at risk of developing a food allergy. With even a little bad luck, they could probably have a reaction that is more severe than those people who only have food allergy to worry about. This is due to the fact that when an allergy takes place, the person will be under stress. Which then may lead to triggering their asthma and/or eczema thus aggravating the situation.

The intensity of the reaction will depend on some circumstances, like the individual’s sensitivity threshold to the food allergen, amount of eaten food, and the exposure scale the person has to the food.

Although, there is no cure to allergies, self-discipline and vigilance will help you, the allergy-sufferer, to overcome these food problems. There may be some medications out there that alleviate the symptoms, but a consultation to the physician will give you a better understanding to your allergy problems as well as treatment recommendations.

Just be aware that some allergies appear without warning.

The same as asthma may not appear in someone’s life until some time in middle age or later.

How Do Multivitamins Help Us?

Will Taking  Daily Multivitamin Capsule Help or Hinder?

Hello from Jonson H

Centuries ago, Earth contained enough of the  vitamins, minerals, and trace elements needed  to maintain our ancestors in a healthy condition. That’s not the case any more. As our population has grwo and established cities to live in, the supply of essential elements is no longert enough. So we need to supplement them somehow.

Multivitamins Are Our  Ticket to Daily Health

An increasingly number of the world’s population is now eager and interested in looking after their health and in keeping tune with their well-being. Probably wihtout knowing exactly why.

The makers and peddlers of multivitamins and other food supplements are more interested in making profits tjhan telling us why we need to take them.

It is important to note that this awareness is progressively contributing to the creation of several health supplements to benefit both the adults and the young ones. Dietary and vitamin supplements have constantly proven their worth to health conscious individuals.

As we get older, supplementing our vitamin intake become more important than ever.

An excellent daily multivitamin supplement does not only develop our general bodily functions but also improves our mental and physical condition and well being. Occasionally, though, specification by our doctors  is needed in appropriately supplementing nutrients to deal with any individual needs. An example would be in heart disease patients, they may recommend having to take in CoQ10 in alleviating the effects of the condition. Alzheimer’s disease can be effectively prevented by a regular combination of Vitamin C and E intake.

Multivitamin supplements necessarily include all the vitamins and nutrients essential for recommended daily dosage. Multivitamin supplements may also be formulated to meet the needs of individual conditions like pregnancy in women who are still of child-bearing age. we older people also benefit from taking a daily multivitamin.

It is a well settled fact that multivitamins in liquid form are more efficient than the ordinary pill forms. This is due to the fact that the body can easily absorb liquid nutrients five times more than ordinary multivitamins in tablet or capsule form.

Basically, the body needs 13 essential vitamins to function properly. In regulating the crucial performance of the body, it has to have vitamins A, B, C, D, E, K, B12, and the 7 B-complex vitamins. Majority of these vitamins are obtained by our body through the food that we eat. The danger of illness or even mortality is in the deficiency of some of the essential vitamins. This is where vitamin supplementation comes in. It counteracts the illness caused by such deficiency. With this fact, it is very unlikely for someone to refuse vitamin supplementation on a daily basis. So the question now is, why is it necessary for individuals to take multivitamins when majority of our daily diet can provide us with the basic nutrients we need? It may not be compulsory, but everyone can profit from daily multivitamins.

As previously mentioned, the clear benefit of daily intake of multivitamins it to prevent vitamin/nutrient deficiency. Some personal circumstances may increase dietary needs. Conditions such as old age, alcoholism, smoking, and exposure to excessive pollution, alll of which have long-term detrimental effects to the body’s  systems can be successfully counteracted by multivitamins.

Stress is also one risk factor which needs serious supplementation that multivitamins can provide. Especially with people who have so much to do and have a hard time in keeping up with their health needs, multivitamins are a must to keep them always on the go without any health complications in the long run. Stress formulations benefit both our mental ability and daily endurance. Aside from the mentioned benefits, daily multivitamins also minimize the risk of cancer or any cardiovascular disease.

Most  people, if not all, testify to have a feeling of comfortable health in regularly taking in multivitamins. This is due to the synergistic or combined effects of the supplemental ingredients found in multivitamins. A fat-soluble antioxidant vitamin, like the Vitamin E, works to neutralize probable harmful free agents in the body. This vitamin also maintains healthy skin through protection of cell membranes, blood circulation, heart, nerves, red blood cells, and muscles.  An important consideration as we age and our skin starts to wrinkle.

Another antioxidant is the Vitamin C which effectively fights blood cell infection and is vital in collagen formation, wound healing, and formation of bone structures, capillaries, and teeth. Vitamin is also helpful in the iron absorption from plant sources. Vitamins A, D, K and other supplemental nutrients found in multivitamins have specific functions that benefit the bodily functions.

While daily intake of multivitamins may have proven beneficial, it is not a 100% guarantee to be free of serious illness attributed to other factors. It is often a misconception that symptoms of disease may always be cured by taking multivitamins. Health experts have the better opinion of immediate medical assistance rather than resorting to multivitamins alone.

Yes we can get many of our necessary vitamins from wht we eat. But possibly not enough. The foods we eat are becoming more highly processes, thus furthe reducing their natural vitamin and mineral levels.

As we take our daily walks, we need to be sure that we maintain our body’s efficiency. Taking a daily multivitamiin will help wit that.

Combine Eating and Exercise

Should We Exercise and Eat? Or Just Diet?

Hello from Jonson H

The other night I happened to actually pick up the words in an advertisement on televsision. Like most of us, I assume, I normally tune them out. despite the fact tjhat the producers of the advertisements turn the volume up when producing them. If yuou didn’t know that already.

Anyway, the particular advertisement was for some kind of fat reduction system.

The words I heard were something like:

Taking this Fat reduction pill will reduce your weight and fat storage levels WHEN COMBINED WITH A HEALTHY DIET AND REGULAR EXERCISE”

For crying out loud, even the village idiot knows that combining healthy eating habits and regular exercise will always mean thet we will end up fitter and weighing less. We could take a sugar pill and eat well and do some regular exercise. And end up lighter and fitter.

Anytime you exercise, you do so in order to try and maintain good health. You also know that you have to eat as well, so your body will have the energy it needs to exercise and maintain for the everyday tasks of life. For making the best of your exercise, what you eat before and after you workout is very important.

In other posts I’ll be writing about what kinds of foods to eat so you feel fuller for longer. As a way to help avoid eating sugary snacks.

No matter what kinmd of exercise you are going to be doing, you should always make it a point to eat a balanced mix of protein and carbohydrates. What makes that determining percentage of carbs and protein you consume is thee exercise and the intensity level that you plan to work at. for most of us , that exercise will be a walk. So low intensty and low impact.

The ideal time for you to eat your pre exercise  meal is an hour before you start. If you plan to work at a low intensity level, you should keep your pre exercise  meal down to 200 calories or so.

So you don’t start imagining that you’ll be starving yourself, a piece of steak about the size of the palm of your hand plus a lettuce, tomato, and onion salad is probably less than 200 calories, give or take.

Those of you who are doing a cardio session will need to consume a mix of 2/3 carbs ( the salad) and 1/3 protein (the steak). Doing so will give you longer sustained energy from the extra carbs with enough protein to keep your muscle from breaking down while you exercise.

In addition, your body’s metabolism will use the calories in the salad to break down the calories in the steak. There won’t be enough calories in the salad to do that , so you metabolism wioll use your body fat stores to finish the job anyway. By adding your walk, even more calories are needed. TYhus aiding weight loss. Win-Win.

Eating after you exercise is just as important as your pre workout meal. Anytime you exercise, whether its cardio or resistance, you deplete energy in the form of glycogen. The brain and central nervous system rely on glycogen as their main source of fuel, so if you don’t replace it after you exercise, your body will begin to break down muscle tissue into amino acids, and then convert them into usable fuel for the brain and the central nervous system.

Keep in mind that mostly during resistance exercise, you’ll break down muscle tissue by creating micro tears. What this means, is that after a workout, your muscles will instantly go into repair mode. Protein is the key here for
muscle repair, as you don’t want muscle breaking down even further to create fuel instead of lost glycogen.

Once you have finished a cardio session, you’ll need to consume mainly carbohydrates, preferably those with high fiber. Rice, oatmeal, whole wheat pasta, and northern fruits are excellent sources. Try to consume 30 – 50 grams of there types of carbs after you exercise. After your cardio workout, it is fine to eat within 5 – 10 minutes. Avoid sugary drinks and snacks of course.

The end result is that you’ve got some exercise while eating in a healthy fashion.
